Martin Lewis has warned some in the UK will “simply starve or freeze” as energy bill prices skyrocket. The Money Saving Expert founder spoke out in a new interview.

The consumer champion and financial expert discussed the impending energy bill hike in a new interview with national newspaper The Guardian.

He warned: “I think people are going to feel worse than they have for a long time this year. When your energy bill comes in and it’s £3,000 for a year instead of £800, nobody feels good.”

He also warned there are “people who will simply starve or freeze because of this.” Alarmingly, the ITV star then warned: “And that is not exaggeration.” He also warned it will be “catastrophic” for some.

Mr Lewis has called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to go further with his financial support for those hardest hits by the incoming energy bill hikes. A Government spokesperson said: “We recognise the pressures people are facing with the cost of living, which is why we have set out a generous £21 billion package of support.

“This includes a £150 tax council rebate from April and a further £200 energy bill discount in October to cut energy bills quickly for the majority of households, while the energy price cap continues to insulate millions of customers from volatile global gas prices.”

“We will set out an energy supply strategy which will supercharge our renewable energy and nuclear capacity to bolster our domestic supply and help drive down energy costs.”
