A 3.6-magnitude earthquake shook the Bay Area on Saturday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quake on the San Andreas fault was detected by USGS at 9:59 am Its epicenter was about two and a half miles northeast of Corralitos, an unincorporated community in Santa Cruz County, north of Watsonville. Residents around the region reported feeling the quake, but it shook most strongly in the South Bay.
After a damage assessment, Cal Fire CZU, which serves the San Mateo and Santa Cruz areas, reported no damage as of around 11 am Cal Fire SCU, which serves Santa Clara County, also hadn’t reported damages by late morning.
The origin of the quake was just over eight miles under the earth’s surface, according to USGS, making it a shallow earthquake under the agency’s definition. Shallow earthquakes tend to feel stronger and cause more damage, according to the agency.
A smaller quake rattled the East Bay just over a week ago. And almost exactly 65 years ago, the “forgotten” templor of 1957 shook Daly City and the northern Peninsula — one of the strongest Bay Area quakes between 1906 and 1989.
