Director Daniel Espinosa confirms that a version of most marvel characters exists in Sony’s Morbius universe, including Spider-Man and Iron Man!
Director Daniel Espinosa establishes that Spider-Man exists within the same universe as Sony’s Morbius. After the success of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies, Sony has released movies centering on Marvel characters like Venom and now Morbius in the upcoming movie. Morbius is set to follow biochemist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) as he infects himself with a form of vampirism after attempting to cure his rare blood disease.
Audiences were given a closer look at the character when a Morbius trailer riddled with Sony Marvel easter eggs was finally released. There are several nods to other Marvel characters, most notably Spider-Man. Prominently featured in the promotional footage is some Spider-Man street art that has been graffitied with the word “murderer.” Fans immediately took this as a direct link to No Way Home, as a similar imagery and ideology are plastered throughout the movie after Peter Parker was wrongfully accused of the murder of Mysterio.

Espinosa addressed these appearances in the Morbius trailer during an interview with Cinema Blend. While confirming that Spider-Man does exist in that universe, the director is quick to clarify that it might not be the version of Spider-Man that fans think. The concept of the multiverse is not new to Marvel comics fans and Espinosa plans on taking full advantage of it, stating that almost all universes will have a variation of much-loved characters like Spider-Man and Tony Stark, but they will differ from to universe. This vague answer could mean anything, but the specific mention of a Tony Stark variant could hint at some kind of appearance from the character, especially if this Spider-Man is intended to be Holland’s, as many believe it is. Read the full quote below:
Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the (universes) that existed in the Marvel universe, if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of – the Marvel string theory, if you would call it that. It’s very related to, if you remember, the alternative Seinfelds. You have a world where you have the same characters, and it’s ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different. So in almost all verses, you have Spider-Man, or a Fantastic Four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius. But they will be different in tone. That’s not quite the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (is) approaching the idea, but they’re remaining to some core truth. Then you have the second kind of legend, which is about the totem. Which is that, in all universes, there is a spider totem. Which means that in all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man. Or a Spider-Woman.
Street art wasn’t the only Spider-Man link, as Michael Keaton was revealed to be part of the Morbius cast in the trailer. After his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, whether the Vulture would return or not was left ambiguous, though it was later confirmed by Keaton, who revealed he was filming a secret project as Adrian Toomes aka Vulture. While it may be easy to presume that these characters are one and the same, there hasn’t been an official confirmation. Despite this, Leto has also been toying with fans about what these Spider-Man references could mean.
The future of Holland’s Spider-Man has been unclear since No Way Home seemingly rounded off his trilogy, however, the constant teases from Sony suggest that they’re far from finished with the character. With this in mind, Leto is eager to see Morbius and Spider-Man interact, suggesting a fight between the pair. Unfortunately, Espinosa doesn’t give fans a very clear-cut answer about which Spider-Man is in Morbius. Although it does open up some interesting possibilities, as this could give way for further Marvel appearances from Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire, or maybe an entirely new Spider-Person.
