Martin Lewis, the founder of the MoneySavingExpert consumer website, has told MPs the Government must bring forward more help on energy bills as he warned households are set for a ‘fiscal punch in the face’ next month.

Mr Lewis told the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee that a household with typical energy use is currently paying £1,277 but when the new price cap takes effect from April 1 that will rise to £1,971.

The price cap is then due to go up again in October, with predictions suggesting it could hit £2,500 – that would mean households suffering a £1,300 increase in just one year.

Mr Lewis said that on April 1 ‘people are going to feel a fiscal punch in the face’ as he urged Rishi Sunak to pledge more help.

The Chancellor has already announced measures to provide households with up to £350 of support, but Mr Lewis said this is ‘clearly not enough’.

Asked what more the Government could do, Mr Lewis said: ‘It needs to give them more money and it really is as simple as that.’
