Earthquakes strike eastern Taiwan – Focus Taiwan

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.7 and 3.7 jolted Taiwan’s east coast early Tuesday morning, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Taitung County at 5:30 am Its epicenter was located 70.6 kilometers north-northeast of Taitung County Hall, and it occurred at a depth of 29.4 kilometers, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a templor, was highest in Taitung County, where it is measured 4 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.

A “4” indicates most people in the area being startled, apartment buildings shaking, and unsecured objects toppling to the ground.

The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in Hualien County, according to CWB data, which indicates many people being awoken and feeling their building shaking, with some movement of loose objects.

About one hour later at 6:38 am, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake hit about 25.6 kilometers south of Hualien County Hall off the coast of Hualien County at a depth of 5.3 kilometers, the Seismology Center said.

It was located about 50 kilometers north of the earlier earthquake.

The intensity of the tremblor was highest in Hualien County, where it measured 3, CWB data showed.
