TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Monday announced that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit Nias, in North Sumatra just before midnight at 23:35 Indonesia Western Time (WIB). The agency’s head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono assured people that the tsunami detection systems were not triggered.
The quake’s epicenter came off the coast of West Sumatra, West Nias Regency, 138 kilometers southwest and from a depth of 21 kilometers.
BMKG stated that this quake is classified as a shallow earthquake caused by cesarean activities in the investigator’s fracture zone. “The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a strike-slip movement mechanism,” Daryono explained.
The modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential. As of 00:06 WIB, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity.
