Labor has suspended an MP after she described the chancellor as “superficially” black.
Rupa Huq, the MP for Ealing Central & Acton, has apologised after addressing a fringe event at Labor’s annual conference in Liverpool. She told the audience that “you would not know” that Kwasi Kwarteng was black. He became Britain’s first black chancellor this month.
“Superficially he is a black man,” she said. “He went to Eton, I think; he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country. If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black.”
Kwasi Kwarteng has not commented on the controversy
