The US Geological Survey reported that a 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook the West Texas region Wednesday.
The earthquake took place 25.5 miles west-southwest of Mentone around 3:32 pm and happened at a depth of 5.5 miles, according to the USGS. That region is one of the most active for earthquakes in the region
Earthquaketrack.com reports the earthquake is the third strongest in the state’s history. There were reports of people being able to feel it in Midland.
A quake with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is “often felt, but only causes minor damage,” according to Upseis, an educational site for seismologists. There are about 30,000 quakes each year, according to the site.
