Geoff Kelly says The Game Awards 2022 will be the shortest show yet

Game Awards host Jeff Kelly says this year’s awards are the shortest yet.

“Tonight is probably the shortest show we’ve been on,” he said on Twitter. “It’s going to run 2.5 hours but we’ve streamlined the runtime with more focused content, fewer sponsors, more sponsors and some big theatrical moments.”

What those theatrical moments will be, remains to be seen… but they seem to be making a lot of use in the show’s reduced runtime.

He added that “a shorter running time means less potential to attract viewers”. “We don’t expect explosive growth for streaming, but we feel this is the right move for the industry and franchise leading up to our 10th show next year.”

Some ideas to think about as we gear up for #TheGameAwards

The Game Awards returns with a live audience tonight for the first time in three years. The nominations include some of the biggest games of the year, and you can expect a lot of important moments, such as game reveals, musical numbers, as well as … the awards themselves.

“Reveals are spaced out across the show, so hopefully the pacing will be good,” Keighley explained. “There are so many fun moments. We also dropped surprise presenters, performers, and a lot of previously unannounced games.”

As for the people who reveal themselves, it looks like a fun year:

He added, “There are games that reveal tonight that I have been waiting to show you for years.” “We don’t make games, so we’re only as good as what ships and what’s ready to show. I feel really good about this year’s lineup.”

The Game Awards can be streamed free-for-all tonight, December 8th at 4pm PT / 7pm ET starting with the IGN Pre-Show. The party will start at 5pm PT / 8pm ET once the pre-show is over.

“You will have an opinion on the divide between awards/advertisements, advertisements, and winners – we fully expect and embrace that. I hope you leave feeling happy and proud to be part of this community. The work done this year and the future of the medium is very exciting.”
