Calvin Phillips insists Raheem Sterling’s imminent return to Qatar has given the England camp a “huge boost” and believes he will play an important part in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against France.

The Chelsea striker, who left Doha on Sunday evening following reports of a break-in at his home in Surrey, will return to the team to train at their headquarters in Al Wakrah on Friday ahead of the France match.

Sterling, who turns 28 today, started England’s first two group stage matches in Qatar but did not feature in the win over Wales and was not in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up against Senegal before his departure.

Asked how he would react to Sterling’s return, Phillips said: “A huge lift. Raheem is a great player and obviously he had to.”
