12th place: England 65-1 (Duquette 32, Pope 11) Muhammad Ali, under a dirty sky, almost lit by a winter sun. Duckett, who has a touch of Mike Gattings about him, though in 21st-century fashion, has the power for four. Pope picks up a bunch of singles.
“Good morning, Tanya (and John Starbuck!).” Hi Brian Withington.
“The fog seems to burn slowly in Multan, while here in Dorridge, ‘it’s a bloody freeze’ inside me?” , as Cery Matthews said. May I confess I am quietly relieved that England openers have refrained from too many pyrotechnics so far, as some of us more mature OBOers are still recovering from the sheer glorious insanity of the First Test”.

11th PO: England 55-1 (Duquette 27, Pope 6) Well, England are clearly trying to dislodge Abrar from attack. Oh cruel Dockett, sweeping two repeat charges for four straight hits.
10th: England 44-1 (Duquette 18, Pope 4) Just a couple from Muhammad Ali, who continues to pull away.
Ben Barkley asks, “In the photo, the stands are empty. Can you explain?” Hi Ben, It seems there are only a few people, although lively enough – some Barmei army singing jersalame and some Pakistani musicians. Commentators said they can expect more to arrive as the day goes on. Play started at 10 am Multan time.
9th: England 42-1 (Ducette 16, Pope 4) Aha! Newcomer wraps, a dab of sun cream and a pair of glasses. Throwing his first ball, Crowley caught two. He keeps throwing it and what a way to start Test cricket! Crowley has done one that he turns away. Bob, in a powerful buzzing motion, sweeps it with four first balls.

The wicket! Crawley B Abrar 19 (England 38-1)
wicket with his fifth ball in test cricket! Crowley did a job like Kipper playing around a high fidelity googly. Hide under his arm, and scurry away while Abrar is attacked.
8th place: England 36-0 (Crowley 16, Duckett 16) Two beautiful boundaries for England, another stellar drive from Crawley and a medium attack from Duckett.

7th: England 27-0 (Crowley 12, Duckett 12) Duckett slams Fahim with a backhand for four and another three from his midfield. England picks up the pace here.

6th: England 18-0 (Crowley 5, Duckett 7) A preliminary for Muhammad Ali, who had a much better start to this Test than the previous ones.
Any news on the stadium? asks Andrew Miles. Dusty road again or any signs of something different?
“I’m only up because I thought I heard an intruder, but I’m pretty sure no one was there. I would get up and check but it’s cold.”
I don’t have any evidence for this, but I feel thieves are less common when it’s below freezing. He will stop me anyway. Maybe turn up the volume on TMS, I’m sure that would freak him out. In any event, the pitch feels less road-like and is likely to crack rough and spin.
Fifth: England 18-0 (Crowley 11, Duckett 5) Ooof, Faheem’s turnover touch as he serves the cutter. Another neat Command of Four from Crowley.

Fourth place: England 14-0 (Crowley 11, Duckett 5) The drums beat rhythmically in the stands. Good dispersion for now, but expect more later. Plenty of action around the mysterious, bespectacled 24-year-old spinner Abrar Ahmed. Only three of Ali finished.
Pakistan’s toughest spin has been around for a long time. Not even in the lightbulb era that I remember. Only one specialist (I like Fahim but he is qualified) – apparently the last time Karachi was 1980, 42 years ago!

Third: England 11-0 (Crowley 4, Duckett 5) This is the first time that Faheem Ashraf has taken the new ball in 15 Tests. Crowley is off the mark with long-legged motors in hats and tails.
Good morning Tanya, hello John Starbuck!
“For once, I’m awake before the larks (both ways). I suppose one can say ‘before the bats go to sleep’ except in this weather they must all hibernate in their roosts. Before the owls turn?” From.
2nd PL: England 6-0 (Crowley 0, Duckett 5) Duckett tickles Muhammad Ali in the back and picks up a boundary press. Some clever fielding in the ring cuts something else and it’s all a much better start for Pakistan.
morning session
1st place: England 0-0 (Crowley 0, Duckett) Faheem Ashraf drops the ball on the pitch cracked like a hard-boiled egg due to a medium crack. And against all odds, it comes out virginal.
There is a touch of fog in the air but it starts on time!
Pakistan XI
Pakistan: Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam (captcha), Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Zahid Mahmood, Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali
Three changes are confirmed: the injured Nasim Shah and Haris Rauf as well as Azhar Ali misses, the enigmatic spinner Abrar Ahmed makes his Test debut, he is joined by the slow left-arms captain Muhammad Nawaz and the bowling alleys Faheem Ashraf.

England XI
England: Zak Crawley, Ben Dockett, Ollie Pope (week), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Will Jack, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach, Mark Wood, James Anderson.
The only change is Wood for the injured Livingston.
England wins the toss and will bat
Fasten seat belts!
air pollution
One specific problem is the air quality today in Multan, which is rated as unhealthy. Polluted air is particularly harmful to people who exercise, as well as children, pregnant women and the elderly. Where is the International Criminal Court?
The air quality in Multan on Friday was rated unhealthy. The concentration of PM2.5 is 13.6 times the annual WHO air quality guideline value, with recommendations to wear a mask outdoors and avoid outdoor exercise. Very tough first day of testing ECB_cricketTheRealPCBICC

Greetings from the cold, cold UK. Hymns play and it is here that things look bright in Multan, one of the lesser-known cricket grounds in the world. The ground made its Test debut only in 2001 and today’s second Test between England and Pakistan will be the fifth Test cap bells and whistles.
What have we learned in the three days from the end of the absolutely amazing balls to the last Test with all these guys squatting close enough to pull the loose strings on Muhammad Ali’s shirt and the light pulling wildly? Well, Ben Stokes smeared his beard and suggested he might follow some more extreme tactics due to the early morning Multan haze and late dusk. At this point, there would be nothing surprising.
On the team side, Mark Wood replaced the injured Liam Livingston, in a “not reciprocated” swap. While Ollie Pop keeps the glove over a recovered Ben Foakes – rotten luck, if understandable from England’s point of view.
Pakistan looks like they will be without Naseem Shah after he cut himself in the first Test, and certainly without the injured Haris Rauf. Babar Azam has reportedly ordered a rotating playground – but let’s wait and see.
Well, I have to go to bed and sleep a few hours. See you soon – Play starts at 5am BST.
