A massive fire has broken out in one of Moscow’s largest shopping centers, killing at least one person.
The Russian authorities said that the fire spread over an area of about seven thousand square meters in the huge shopping center in Khimki, northwest of the Russian capital.
The fire caused part of the building to collapse, hampering firefighters’ efforts to tackle the flames.
It broke out before opening the position for clients.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, which is investigating major crimes, said it was looking into the cause of the fire.
Officials initially said arson may have been involved.
But authorities later said the fire appeared to have been started by a welder who apparently breached safety regulations, with an investigation underway.
The shopping center housed a number of Western stores, including IKEA, before the chains were pulled from Russia in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine.
