Welcome! Actress Ruth Madoc has died at the age of 79, her agent confirmed in a statement.
She is best known for playing Gladys Pugh on the 1980s sitcom Hi-de-Hi on Holiday Camp! , she was due to star in the Christmas pantomime Aladdin in Torquay, but had to withdraw earlier this week after a fallout.

Phil Belfield of talent agency Belfield & Ward Ltd called her “one of a kind and a unique talent that many love”.
He said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear and beloved client, Ruth Madoc.
Ruth died on the afternoon of Friday 9 December while in hospital following surgery for a fall earlier in the week, which had forced her to withdraw from Banto in Torquay.
From film work such as Fiddler On The Roof and Under Milk Wood with Richard Burton and her popular TV performance as Gladys Pugh in Hi De Hi! and most recently in Little Britain and on stage with Calendar Girls (theatrical and musical), as well as recent acclaim in the short films Skinny Fat and Cardiff, it truly was a national treasure and was looking forward to getting back on the road in 2023 with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
A true legend of the British entertainment scene, she was one of a kind and a unique talent loved by many. She went way too soon. Our hearts are broken!
Thoughts are with her daughter Lori, son Reese and all of her family.
The BAFTA-nominated star had the lead role in the long-running BBC comedy Hi-de-Hi! , set in 1959 and 1960 in the fictional Maplins holiday camp.
The show ran for nine series, and 58 episodes, from 1980 to 1988.
Her character, Gladys, was the main yellowcoat, famous for her camp tanning advertisements preceded by three distinct notes played on a small xylophone, followed by the title phrase, Hi-de-Hi!
Her recurring storyline centered around her unrequited love for camp recreation director Jeffrey Fairbrother, played by Simon Cadell.
