Emergency services were rendered and a woman – 47-year-old Michelle Hanson – was found dead inside with neck injuries consistent with being caused by a blade article.
Michelle’s now grieving family has released a photo of her.
Police believe Michelle Hanson was murdered at her home in Sunderland last weekend.
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is absolutely devastating for Michelle’s family and our thoughts are still with them at this terrible time.
We will give them whatever support they need as they try to come to terms with the events of the past week. It has been understandably difficult for them and I would like to demand that their privacy be respected by everyone.
Since this incident, we have resolved to locate those responsible and will pursue effective justice against anyone found to be involved.
“A large number of inquiries have been made in the area since Saturday and I would like to thank the victim’s family for their patience and cooperation, as well as the wider public who have supported our investigation.”
