TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – The Karangasem Regency Hotel in Bali was still experiencing aftershocks after yesterday’s 5.2-magnitude earthquake. As of Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m., the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 62 aftershocks.
The number of aftershocks tends to decrease, said the head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Dariono.
The M5.2 earthquake at 17:38 was preceded by the M4.8 earthquake at 16:56, followed by nine aftershocks.
“And 20 minutes later, the M5.2 earthquake occurred, about 10 kilometers from the first quake, adding to the damage,” Dariono said on Twitter.
Dariono also showed an image of a series of earthquake points that occurred mostly in the sea. Aftershocks varied from 1.9 m to 4.6 m.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), as of Wednesday morning, 34 homes of residents had been damaged, mainly due to the geological phenomenon that occurred the day before. These houses are located in several sub-neighbourhoods, including Kubu, Manggis, Karangasem, Rendang and Bebandem.
BPBD Karangasem also reported the infection of two people, both of whom received treatment at the local public hospital.
What causes earthquakes
According to BMKG analysis, the earthquake series was caused by Flores Rising Fault activity. The earthquakes that shook Karangasem were also felt by residents in other areas, including residents of West Nusa Tenggara.
