Summary
On August 14, 2021, Haiti was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Canal du Sud (120 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince). The earthquake killed more than 2,200 people and injured more than 12,000. The vulnerability of the Haitian people to such a catastrophe can be traced back to centuries of colonial exploitation, resource extraction, and political instability; It shows very clearly that disasters are a by-product of the societal construction of risk. This technical background report for the 2021/2022 edition of the Disaster Risk Interconnected Report analyzes the root causes, drivers, impacts, and potential solutions of the Haiti earthquake through forensic analysis of academic literature, media articles, and expert interviews.
