British Gas, E.ON, EDF and more are offering up to £1,500 off your energy bill to subsidize this winter – do you qualify?

The North East – as well as many other parts of the UK – have been hit by heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures this week as Christmas approaches. And while December can be a very expensive month with gift-giving traditions, many will feel additional pressure this year with the ongoing cost of living crunch, affecting energy bills and food costs alike.

With energy prices in particular still rising, while temperatures continue to drop, energy suppliers across the UK have been forced to share updated advice for billpayers struggling to make ends meet.

The energy price cap in January 2023 as set by regulator Ofgem is set to rise to £4,279 – based on average household consumption on a basic supplier tariff. The increase would see a price hike of £356.58 – which is almost £200 more than the average monthly cost this time in 2021.

MEN reports that as well as government support – including an extra £300 for pensioners, a £150 discount on a warm home for low-income people and up to £900 for households on benefits tested – energy suppliers across the board have installed More tips to keep it. Families keep warm during the winter without completely going broke in the process.

Here we explain all the funds that you can access.

Shell Energy is “raising” the discount for warm homes

Shell boasted plenty of advice on saving energy this Christmas, including tips on light decorating costs, cooking fees and tips for regulating heat. However, their latest tip could save customers just under £100 a year in energy – something that families could put to good use over the festive period if they have guests staying.

Shell’s advice is stated on their website: “Keeping a knob on your thermostat is probably the surest way to limit the energy you use, as long as you don’t notice the difference. Try lowering the thermostat in the room by just one degree.”

“By doing this, it is estimated that the typical household could save £85 a year on energy.”

Shell is also giving customers an extra £150 on top of the Government’s £150 warm house discount (totaling £300 in total) to help combat rising energy prices this winter. To be eligible, you must receive any of the following; Jobseeker’s Allowance, Housing Benefit, Universal Credit, Personal Tax Credit, Income Support, Income Related Work, Support Allowance, Employment Tax Credits or Pension Credit.

Shell is also pointing its customers towards the government’s Cold Weather Payments initiative – which automatically issues payments of £25 to people on certain benefits if the temperature drops below 0°C for seven days in a row.

£1,500 from the British Gas Company

The British Gas Energy Trust allows individuals and families in dire need of financial assistance to alleviate some of their monetary problems. Applicants must show a demonstrated interest in wanting to clear their debts using the scholarship.

Strict criteria say you need to spend more than 10 per cent of your income on energy itself, and have less than £1,000 in savings. You must also have previous energy debt of at least £250 and you must be able to prove that you have previously sought advice from debt charities or money advisors.

If you unfortunately don’t qualify, the supplier also has a series of discounts on winter deals this year – including 50 per cent off boiler cover and boiler repairs from £75, and a completely free Hive thermostat if you buy a more energy efficient boiler.
