At a depth of 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles), buildings in the capital, Taipei, shook for a minute and the subway briefly halted operations to ensure the safety of passengers.

Taiwan sits directly on a fault line as part of the Ring of Fire, an active seismological area in the Pacific Ocean.

In September, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the southeastern coast of the island, toppling a building and killing one person.
