Schumacher’s best result in two seasons at Haas was sixth at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix

Mick Schumacher will be the reserve driver for Mercedes in 2023.

The German, son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, lost his race seat for 2023 when the Haas team dropped him in favor of veteran Nico Hulkenberg.

Schumacher’s role at Mercedes will see him work the team’s simulation and be ready to stand in case Lewis Hamilton or George Russell can’t race.

“Mick is a talented young driver. We are delighted that he has joined,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said.

“He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities.

“We also know that with two years of Formula 1 racing experience under his belt, he will be ready to get into the car at short notice to replace Lewis or George, should the need arise.”

Schumacher, who will attend all Grand Prix races during the 2023 season, said he was “thrilled” to take on his new role.

“I am committed to doing everything I can to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment,” said the 23-year-old.

“I see this as a new beginning, and I am excited and grateful to Toto and everyone involved for putting their faith in me.

“F1 is a wonderful world, and you never stop learning, so I’m looking forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting all my efforts on behalf of the Mercedes team.”

Ahead of Mercedes’ announcement, Ferrari issued a statement saying they were severing all ties with Schumacher, who has been a member of the drivers’ academy since 2019.

Schumacher raced for Haas for two seasons, and had a best finish of sixth at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.

Haas felt he had been outmatched by teammate Kevin Magnussen upon the Dane’s return to Formula One in 2022 and considered Hulkenberg a more competitive offer for next season.
