TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A 6.2-magnitude earthquake originating in waters off the east coast of Taiwan struck the island on Wednesday, but no injuries or major damage were immediately reported.
The quake struck 29 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Hualien, a city on Taiwan’s east coast, according to the island’s Central Meteorological Bureau. The depth was 5.7 kilometers (3.5 mi).
Buildings in the capital, Taipei, shook for a minute and the subway stopped operating briefly to ensure the safety of passengers.
Taiwan sits directly on a fault line as part of the Ring of Fire, an active seismological area in the Pacific Ocean.
In September, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the southeastern coast of the island, toppling a building and killing one person.
