The victim’s sister described the lab worker who strangled and slashed the throat of a colleague who had been dating her for less than a month as a “monster,” and told him, “I hope it haunts you.”

Claire Newborough tells Ross McCollam as he sits tearfully in the dock that he is an “unpredictable menace” who has “tricked, murdered and brutalized” her younger brother.

The porn-obsessed 30-year-old was jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 years in front of Meghan Newborough’s family at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

McClame had confessed to manslaughter but was found guilty of murder after a six-week trial, during which he was described as a “sadistic killer”.

Police called him a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and believed he would have killed again.

McCollum and Ms. Newborough, 23, had been seeing each other for about a month when he killed her last year.

He strangled her and then slashed her throat with a carving knife, later telling police he did it to “make sure Megan was dead”.

He then dumped Mrs. Newborough’s body in a bush next to a country lane in Leicestershire before attempting to cover his tracks by changing his clothes and leaving a voicemail on her phone telling her he loved her.

Judge Philip Head, who sentenced McCollam for a “truly appalling” crime, said of the “starred” Mrs. Newborough: “She has had the dreadful misfortune to be involved in an affair with you.”

The victim’s older sister, Claire Newborough, said in the impact statement read to the court: “She was roughly thrown, topless, into a cold and dark field, where the defendant believed she would never be found.

“The thing Megan hated the most was being cold, and as her older sister, the thought of her being so cold and alone for all those hours just devastated me.”

Turning to McCollam, who was sitting sobbing a few feet away, she said: “The definition of a monster is cruel, frightening and vicious – and it is to my great relief that the defendant has been identified as a monster.

“You are an unpredictable menace, a menace to women, a serial killer obsessed.”

Newborough added, “She’s always thought she can fix people, but it’s not possible to fix bad guys.

“I deceived her, killed her, brutalized her, and left her undignified.

“I hope it haunts you.”

Her father, Anthony Newborough, wept when he said the family had lost their “dear, beautiful daughter, Megan, in such horrible circumstances.”

He added, “We are a big, close family that was torn apart by an evil human being.

“It’s like a horror movie, but it’s a true story, Megan’s story, our story.

“These events have caused us so much pain and suffering that we are battling that Megan, in her final moments, would have been terribly frightened.

“She was loved by so many and she touched the lives of so many of those she met and left a huge gap that can never be filled.

“It was our princess and the accuser with his evil hands and strength and evil mind took her from us forever.”

McCollum, who met Mrs. Newborough at the Ibstock brick-making company where they both worked, claimed he killed her in a “blind rage” as a result of undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from childhood sexual abuse.

But the prosecution called it a “package of lies” and said McClame killed Ms Newborough out of anger at his impotence immediately before the attack.

Prosecutors pointed out that he ordered tadalafil from the Internet, used to treat erectile dysfunction.

He searched online for pornography and looked up details of serial killers including Levi Belfield, Ian Huntley and Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, in the hours after he disposed of Ms Newborough’s body.

Knowing she has died, he calls Mrs. Newborough’s phone and leaves a voice message saying, “I had a good time earlier.”

On remand, McCollum also bragged to his cellmate about his use of the knife, and suggested he would use his mental health as a “tool” at trial.

In another incident, a guard overheard him landing in the jail laughing while telling other inmates “If you keep going like this, you’re going to end up like Megan.”

Another prison guard also overheard him joking openly with other inmates about the killing, telling them “If she had gone a little farther, she would have raised her head.”
