Henry Cavill is said to have starred in Warhammer 40K on Amazon

Update at 12.45pm UK: Games Workshop has confirmed that Amazon and Henry Cavill have signed a deal to bring Warhammer 40,000 to screens.

Cavill “brings his know-how” to the mantle of executive producer, and his “sword-arm” to the title role.

There’s a lot we don’t know yet. There is no mention of where Cavill will be playing or a timeline for releases. But still, this is very exciting news for Warhammer 40,000 fans, and confirmation that, finally, the hobby will make it to the big screen.

Games Workshop said the agreement includes rights to the Warhammer 40,000 universe across series, movies, and more. Cavill will star in the 40K Warhammer series and produce across all Amazon Studios productions.

“I’ve loved Warhammer since I was a boy, which made this moment special for me,” Cavill said. “Having the opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe since its inception is quite an honor and a responsibility. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work that Vertigo, Amazon and Games Workshop put into making this happen. One step closer to making this a near lifelong dream come true.”

The original 10am UK story: It’s happening! Please let it happen? Well, this better happen.

Henry Cavill is reportedly set to star in Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill is “attached to star and executive producer of a series adapted from Warhammer 40,000,” with Amazon in “final talks” with Games Workshop for the rights after “months” of negotiations and fending off competitors such as the Emperor’s demonic warp powers of all mankind.

Eurogamer Newsletter: What do you think of The Game Awards 2022? The Good, the Bad and Keighley.

To be clear: This isn’t a done deal, and as you’d expect from a project that has yet to be confirmed, no book or show has been attached. But it seems to happen. Please let it happen!

Cast by DC as Superman and dropped by Netflix as Geralt, Cavill is the perfect person to helm the Warhammer 40,000 series. It is known that he loves Warhammer 40,000, and often talks about it in interviews.

Like me, Cavill is a Warhammer 40,000 nerd, so please indulge in a paragraph or two as I anticipate what this Amazon TV series could be.

The obvious setting is the most famous story of Warhammer 40,000: The Horus Heresy. Spoilers for the Horus Heresy to follow!

Henry Cavill talks about Warhammer on The Graham Norton Show.

Horse Horus is set 10,000 years before Warhammer’s current setting of 40,000, and takes place during a bitter space-marine civil war that nearly destroyed the human imperium.

Horus Heresy is about a super-strong marine named Horus Lupercal who ends up turning a traitor in an attempt to overthrow the God Emperor himself. Backed by the Gods of Chaos, Horus and an entire band of space marines invade Terra (the land of the future), which is fiercely defended by those legions still loyal to the Emperor.

In a dramatic climax, the Emperor kills Horus but is mortally wounded in the process. The Emperor ends up as little more than a corpse on the throne and the Imperium a tattered mess. Suffice it to say that everything goes (more) to nonsense over the next 10,000 years, which brings us to the present bleak environment in which there is nothing but war.

Games Workshop recently released a great trailer for tabletop game The Horus Heresy, which gives you an idea of what I think this Amazon offering should be. Imagine all of this, the sheer scale of Warhammer 40,000, translated into live action and powered by Amazon’s billions. It truly is the stuff of dreamland for fans of the universe.

So, what is left to wonder? Who will Cavill play, of course. My money is on Horus himself. A tragic figure, The Emperor’s Greatest Son is the star of the show, and I’m sure Cavill would be interested in being a part of that. But then who will play the emperor? The other presidents? Malcador the Sigillite?

If it wasn’t obvious now, it was pumped. Please make this good…
