Avatar: The Way of Water’s box office gross is already quite impressive

The box office returns for Avatar: The Way of Water are starting to hit and they’re a massive hit for James Cameron. The blockbuster, which was released Dec. 16 in the US, took in $17 million in previews Thursday night, plus it’s earned about $69 million so far in global markets, including China.

Even more impressively, the film is already tracking to take between $400 and $500 million in total worldwide in its first weekend. If Avatar 2 does indeed achieve this projected total, it will improve dramatically on the original film’s relatively sluggish debut, which only opened at $77 million in the US. Despite that opening, Avatar rocketed to the top of the all-time box office rankings thanks to its 3D graphic boost and impressive ability to keep audiences coming back to Pandora week after week.

Avatar: The Way of Water may manage similar staying power to its predecessor – even if it starts with a bigger mileage in its first weekend. If she can sustain that success, and attract enough curious viewers and returning customers, her huge debut could help her grow into a phenomenon of comparable size to the original, even if she manages to break its predecessor’s previous record of $2.7 billion (yet Several re-releases in the 13 years since it was released) it still seems a bit far-fetched to predict.
