Gareth Southgate will remain England coach

Gareth Southgate has decided to stay on as England manager.

The 52-year-old is not yet in the FA but will still be in charge now that he has contemplated his future all this week following the World Cup quarter-final defeat by France.

Southgate returned home on Sunday after being out and spoke to friends and family about his future. He was determined to leave before the World Cup started – even if England won it – believing there was too much negativity around him.

The news of his staying will come as a huge relief to the Football Association who were desperate for Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland to stay and take England to the European Championships in Germany in 2024. Southgate’s current contract runs until the end of that year and he is now determined to make it happen with the Euro qualifying campaign under way. To Italy in March.

Southgate was appalled by the criticism he faced after England’s disappointing campaign in the Nations League last summer and especially the hostility after the 4-0 defeat at Molineux by Hungary.

He worried his attacks were getting in the way of the team and he needed to consider whether he would stay after dominating England in a precarious 2016 European Championship defeat by Iceland and then Sam Allardyce’s short spell in charge.

Southgate is already the second most successful England manager in history, after Sir Alf Ramsey, and is determined to finally win the title again for the first time since 1966.
