The knight witch deserves more attention than she gets. It’s a Metroidvania shmup where you fly, blast enemies with guns, and cast spells from a deck of cards. For all the combat fanfare, it’s also supremely relaxing, with lush 2D art and sweet character relationships in a post-apocalyptic underground world that’s still somehow filled with plants, rustic cabins, and cute market stalls. There is a free demo to play now.
Here is the launch announcement:
The Metroidvania elements are probably self-explanatory at this point, but each area of the map is made up of different rooms that contain special encounters, optional challenges, new powers and ways to unlock, and a boss battle. Where it differs from most of its peers is that The Knight Witch is not a platform game. You’re flying rather than jumping, and you’ll need to juggle shooting and dodging the patterns of bullets fired by the mechanical gems that invade your home.
The combat feels nimble and powerful from the get-go, but it gets even more exciting with the array of spells. Cards will unlock as you play and you can choose to shuffle them in your deck, and you’ll have three cards from your deck in your hand at any given moment. They can be used during combat assuming you have the energy to use them. The spell may temporarily replace your pistol with a machine gun, fire rocket knives at a nearby enemy, or drop a remotely detonated bomb. Spells are often very powerful, but they are something you use regularly rather than as a special cure.
If it wasn’t obvious, I’ve played two hours of The Knight Witch and am enjoying my time with her. It came out two weeks ago, so there isn’t a lot of “news” in this news story. It’s worth a try, and there’s a demo available from the Steam page.
