Kathy Burke has attacked Jeremy Clarkson after the former Top Gear presenter came under fire for making stinging remarks about Meghan Markle.

In a newspaper column this week, Clarkson wrote that he despises the Duchess of Sussex “on a cellular level” and dreams of people throwing “poo” at her on the street.

He also wrote that he hated Megan more than Rose West, the serial killer who collaborated with her husband, Fred, in the torture and murder of young women and children.

Clarkson’s comments, written in The Sun on Friday 16 December in response to the Harry and Meghan Netflix documentary, were widely condemned as “vile and disgusting”.

Now, comedian and actor Burke has weighed in, tweeting on Sunday, December 18: “Watching the rest of #HarryandMeganNetflix. I still think they’re awesome and love their relationship with Meghan’s amazing mom, Doria.

“I wish them continued happiness and people are such a huge particle. Clarkson continued to ache with the thought of it.”

One of the first people to contact Clarkson was Jacqui Smith MP, writing on Twitter: “I’m your age @JeremyClarkson and couldn’t disagree with you more. Why must you be so awful? I can’t believe it’s good for you and definitely not good for the rest of us.”

Another person posted: “I’m sorry but what did Meghan Markle do to deserve to be hated more than Rose West? I’m trying to think of what she did worse than what Rose did? This is just vile and disgusting. Is Jeremy Clarkson upset that Meghan stood up for herself?” “

Clarkson has been very critical of the Duchess before. In March last year, after Harry and Meghan interviewed Oprah Winfrey, Clarkson said: “Trust me on this one. A toast to Markle…”

Harry and Meghan were directed by Academy Award-winning director Liz Garbus, who has worked on a number of documentaries about public figures, including Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Fisher and Nina Simone.
