Gareth Southgate will remain England coach. The Football Association confirmed this morning, the news that Telegraph Sport published last night, that the 52-year-old player will remain in his position now, after reflecting on his future throughout this week after the disappointment of losing the World Cup quarter-finals against France last week.

A statement from the FA read: “We are pleased to confirm that Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager, leading our campaign for UEFA Euro 2024.

“Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support and our planning for the Euros starts now.”

Southgate returned home to North Yorkshire on Sunday after being out and spoke to friends and family about his future. He had privately decided to leave before the World Cup started, believing there was too much negativity around him and he could hold the team back.

Confirming his stay would come as a huge relief to the Football Association who were desperate for Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland to stay and take England to the European Championships in Germany in 2024. Holland was among those urging Southgate not to quit.

Southgate’s current contract runs until the end of that year and he will now fulfill it, as the European Championship qualifying campaign kicks off with grueling fixtures away to Italy on March 23, and at home in Ukraine three days later.

Southgate was appalled by the criticism he faced following England’s disappointing Nations League campaign last summer, particularly the animosity that followed a 4-0 home defeat at Molineux to Hungary, which worried him and led him to ask himself if he was a problem now.

Southgate was worried that attacks on him could derail the team and he needed to consider whether he would stay although he did manage England in a precarious state in 2016 after defeating Iceland in the European Championship and then assigning Sam Allardyce in one game. .
