Steve Borthwick is set to be appointed the new England manager after the Russian Football Union and Leicester City reached an agreement over compensation.

The Russian Federation will hold a press conference on Monday to announce Borthwick’s appointment.

The Tigers’ director of rugby will replace Eddie Jones in the post after the Australian’s seven-year reign ended earlier this month.

Borthwick worked under Jones as England’s attacking coach before leaving for Leicester in 2020, reclaiming their fortunes after finishing 11th in the Premier League and going on to win the title last season.

His task now is to find similar success with an England side who are no longer favorites for next year’s World Cup finals on the heels of five wins from 12 matches – their worst performance since 2008 and costing Jones his job.

Borthwick, the former international lock who won 57 caps for England, was soon targeted by the Football Association but continued to lead Leicester while negotiating a compensation package.

His final match in charge ended with victory over Clermont Auvergne in the Champions Trophy on Saturday.

Borthwick is a ridiculously good boss

Borthwick’s appointment earned Leicester and England’s Anthony Watson the seal of approval earlier this month.

“What I will say is that Steve is a ridiculously good coach,” Watson said after the Tigers’ Cup opener against the Ospreys on Dec. 11.

“Steve is a really honest man. He’ll tell you exactly how it is – there’s no sugarcoating. Like it or not, he’ll tell you, and secondly, everything he says is backed up by evidence.”

“I remember he came up to me in pre-season and we were talking about breaking down. He said he’s watched every one of my loads over the last two or three years and what I have to do on the ground to make sure we can keep possession.

“I don’t know how many loads it would have been, but two or three years’ worth of loads is a decent amount. For him, touring it all just shows you how dedicated he is.”
