A small 3.6 earthquake hits the San Francisco area

San Francisco –

A small 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, waking thousands of people and causing minor damage.

The USGS said the quake occurred at 3:39 a.m. Saturday with the epicenter in El Cerrito. The small city of 25,000 is located north of Berkeley and about a 16-mile (25-kilometer) drive from downtown San Francisco.

The Bay Area News Group reports that this is the largest earthquake to hit Contra Costa County since November 2021 and was felt by thousands of people outside the county and around the region, including San Francisco.

Major damage and losses usually don’t happen until temperatures are around 5.5 or higher, said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center, which is part of the Geological Survey. By Saturday morning, he said, nearly 8,000 people had reported the earthquake’s impact.

Carrie Kahn of Berkeley told the Bay Area News Group that she was asleep when the building started shaking.

“I was so relieved when I realized the power and internet were still working. Then I saw the mess in the kitchen in the morning. Spice jars had fallen out of the cupboard and they were all broken.
