The cold snap that has gripped Britain in recent days has led to melting of snow in homes flooded with explosive pipes.
Britain has seen a nearly 30C swing in less than a week, as the country’s temperature fell from a record low of -15.7C in Scotland on Tuesday to sweltering temperatures in the mid-teens on Monday.
A Met Office spokesperson said the temperature change was unusual, but had been seen before in the UK.
The largest daily temperature change of 29.3 °C was recorded on December 3, 1995 in Altnaharra, Scotland.
Ice and snow warnings by the Met Office, which were a mainstay last week, have now given way to rain warnings, and there are already a number of flood warnings.
Warm air rushing into the UK from Monday is expected to bring a new wave of weather misery for Britain’s most vulnerable.
Rapidly melting water pipes are already beginning to burst in some parts of the country, while the rare “freezing rain” that rolls in from Sunday can cover roads and sidewalks in a thick layer of ice as it descends on frozen ground.
Residents across four streets in Winnrich, Berkshire, woke up Sunday morning to find floodwaters crashing into their front door and gardens and the road flooded after a water main exploded.
Firefighters rushed to the scene at Reading Road, Wenrich, near Reading, Berks, and used water-soaked booms to try to stop tens of thousands of gallons of water spilling over to other roads and homes.
Residents of flats at Westbrook Court found themselves trapped in their homes, the ground floor flats being flooded with water pouring through the front door and ventilation bricks.
