Authorities said five people were shot dead in a condominium in a suburb of Toronto before police killed the gunman.

Police were called to an apartment building in Vaughan, Ontario, at around 7.20pm on Sunday to reports of an active shooter who shot several victims in an apartment in Vaughan, Ontario.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and Toronto has long prided itself on being one of the safest major cities in the world.

“When the police arrived, an interaction between the officers and a male subject took place and the subject was shot. They were pronounced dead at the scene,” York Region Police said in a statement issued late Sunday.

York Police Chief James McSween added “a horrific sight”. “Six dead. One of them is the topic. The other five are victims.”

Another person was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition but is expected to live.

McSween said he had no details on whether the shooter was a resident of the building.

Officer Laura Nichol told CNN that the incident was “the most horrible call I’ve ever seen in my entire career.”

Nicol said in a previous press conference that the victims appeared to be from more than one unit.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit, which is involved in the death or serious injury of the police, is conducting the investigation.

Police did not identify the suspect and did not give the name of the deceased.

Police evacuated the building at 9235 Jane Street, North Rutherford Road, but McSwain said there was no further threat to the community. He said they hope residents will be back in their units within hours.
