Bolton: A couple gets a new home for their baby after a mold problem

A couple from Farnworth have been offered a new home after raising concerns that the health of their eight-week-old son could be affected by ‘persistent’ mold.

Chyna Davis, 28, says she first noticed mold in the home when she looked at the property in 2018, but it was only a small amount, and she didn’t think it would be a problem.

She says it then became a bigger problem in 2019 and that they did their best to remove the mold, using a mold remover consistently, as well as a device installed in the bathroom.

Bolton at Home moved the couple temporarily to allow the work to be carried out this year, but the couple said it kept coming back and got worse when they returned to the property in October.

Chyna suffers from asthma, and her husband, Marco, suffers from a lung disease, but they were most concerned about their son d’Artagnan who already had allergic lungs.

Chyna said: “It wasn’t that bad when we first moved in.

“But people who come in can smell rot.

“We feel like we can’t stay there for long because he’s sitting on your chest.

“We can do treatments, but we shouldn’t be going through this with an eight-week-old baby.

You can see condensation at the bottom of the walls.

“I wake up every morning to find a puddle of water at the front door.

“Don’t expect it to be a reality.”

Awareness of the dangers of mold has been raised following the death in December 2020 of Awab Ishaq, aged two, from a respiratory illness caused by mold in the one-bedroom housing association flat where he lived with parents Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Aminin in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. .

Marco says it got so bad he had to wear a Covid mask to sleep because of mold on the window sill next to his bed.

He said: “I didn’t want to wear a mask, but I felt I had to.

“I was more worried about my son.”

Mold also made its way onto their clothes and furniture, which meant they had to throw some things away.

They currently have to store some clothes in the baby’s travel cot to avoid mold from the wardrobe.

But after Bolton at Home was approached by The Bolton News, the couple have since been given a two-bedroom house, with a front garden, which Chyna and Marco have accepted.

She added: “We’ll move right after Christmas.

“This means that our little one’s health could have been better, but it could have been a lot different.

Everyone deserves to live in a safe environment.

“This could not have come at a better time.”

We’ve contacted our clients and arranged for mold to be remedied immediately,” said Richard Hargreaves, director of property maintenance for the Bolton Group of Homes. We also support the family to move to another home as soon as possible. ”
