His contract is set to run until after the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, but his pressing priority is to prepare for the 2023 Six Nations Cup. England begin their campaign against Scotland at Twickenham on Saturday 4 February.

“This great sport that we love, it has such power,” Borthwick said at Twickenham on Monday. “What I want to do is make sure that this team uses that power to make kids fall in love with the game.

“We have a lot of work to do, and it’s not going to happen overnight. But I think we have a great group of players. We have experienced players, and I think we have young, emerging players who have incredible talent, and that makes me really excited.”

Prior to taking charge of Leicester, Borthwick worked as an attacking coach with the England senior team under Jones and also worked with the Australian national team for Japan that led to the 2015 Rugby World Cup, as an assistant coach.

The former second grade playing career included 10 years at Bath and six seasons with Saracens. Borthwick was part of the England World Cup winning team in 2003 and became England captain in 2008 when Martin Johnson was England manager.

He won 57 international matches and played nearly 400 domestic matches before retiring from football in 2014.
