A British couple has been found dead in their home in Majorca after suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police were alerted after a housekeeper went to the property because their worried son, who lives in the UK, was unable to contact them.

They found the bodies of the 62-year-old man and his 56-year-old partner.

The discovery was made at about 4 pm today in the property of Selva at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, which is considered one of the most beautiful towns of the island.

The police force has not issued any official comment yet and officers say the results of the autopsy will be key to determining the direction of the ongoing investigation.

The British couple, whose bodies are believed to have been undiscovered for at least two days, has yet to be named in full.

The house they lived in was located between Selva, which has a population of about 4,000 people, and Manacor.

The mayor of Silva, Joan Rutter, told regional television station IB3 that the most likely hypothesis being considered was poisoning linked to the gas flaring.

He went to the scene of the accident today as soon as he was informed of the news.

There were no immediate reports of any signs of violence at the home of the British couple.

They are said to have bought the property they were found dead about a year and a half ago.
