Jeremy Clarkson’s comments about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, were ‘horrible’ but he remains host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? “For now,” said an ITV senior.
Kevin Lego made the remarks after Clarkson’s column in The Sun became the most complained about article by the Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO) ever.
Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Syndicate event in London on Tuesday, Lego, managing director of ITV Studios, said: “I would say what he writes in a newspaper column… We have no control over what he says.
We’re hiring him as a skilled announcer for TV’s most popular quiz, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
“So it wasn’t in our wheelhouse but I don’t know what he was thinking when he wrote that. It was terrible.”
Asked if ITV would keep Clarkson as quiz show host, a position he inherited from Chris Tarrant in 2018, Mr Lego said: “Yes, for the time being”.
Asked if Clarkson represents ITV’s values, Lego replied, “No, of course he doesn’t in this case.”
It comes after the regulator said the piece, which has since been removed from The Sun’s website at Clarkson’s request, had received more than 20,800 complaints as of 5pm on Tuesday.
The number exceeded the total number of complaints received by the media regulator in 2021, which is 14,355 complaints.
Meanwhile, more than 60 MPs wrote to the editor of The Sun condemning the column “in the strongest terms”.
The letter, submitted by Conservative MP Caroline Knox, demanded that the publication take action against Clarkson.

She said the former Top Gear presenter’s “hateful” article about the Duchess of Sussex had contributed to an “unacceptable climate of hate and violence”.
His column, published on Sunday, said he was “dreaming of the day when she would be made to walk naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chanting ‘Shame! ‘” Throw lumps of excrement at her.
The remarks sparked a backlash, with Clarkson’s daughter Emily, as well as many others, speaking out against him.
Clarkson responded with a statement saying he would be more careful in the future.
However, this has been criticized for not including an apology.
“Oh dear, I just put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I clumsily referenced a scene in Game of Thrones, and it went badly with so many people. I’m horrified. I’ve done so much hurt and I’ll be more careful in the future.” wrote on Twitter.

‘Enough is enough’
The letter, written by MPs to Victoria Newton, editor-in-chief of The Sun, read: “We are horrified by Jeremy Clarkson’s recent article in your publication. As parliamentarians of all persuasions we condemn in the strongest terms the violent misogynist language against the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle .

“This kind of language has no place in our country and it is unacceptable to allow it to be published in a major newspaper. Ms Markle has faced multiple credible threats to her life, which required the intervention of the Metropolitan Police.
“Hateful articles like those by Clarkson do not exist in a vacuum, and contribute directly to this unacceptable climate of hate and violence.”
