The hospital worker has seen it all – an apple, a mango, shaving foam – but what they’ve never seen is a World War I bomb.
An 88-year-old man with exactly that arrived at the emergency room of Sainte-Musse Hospital in Toulon, France, last Saturday evening.
The hospital was evacuated after doctors found that the 18-centimetre, 9-centimetre-long projectile lodged in the man’s rectum, Nice-Matin reports.
A police source told the Southeast regional newspaper that the man found the “collectibles” by chance along with a burning base at his brother’s house.
He tried to assure the doctors that the bomb was useless, but the hotel management called for a “partial evacuation”, during which he led workers and patients into the main hall.
A bomb disposal team, police and fire services were also called to the site while new patients were sent to nearby hospitals from 9pm to 11:30pm.
Only two wards were functioning as usual – the gynecological and maternity departments.

The man later found himself lying in a tent and underwent surgery to remove the shell from his stomach.
The patient is now in ‘good health’ and was minimally in shock, a witness told Nice-Matin, and hospital management thanked the staff on Monday.
An apple, a mango and even a can of shaving foam – we used to find unusual things inserted where they shouldn’t, said one hospital worker.
‘But a shell?’ never.’
Experts say there are quite a few reasons why someone would stick something (though perhaps not a wartime bomb) in their hack.
People have been shocked by everything from live snakes, glass bottles, an instant coffee pot with staples in the lid, a Buzz Lightyear toy, and concrete mix to eggplants up their butts.
Why? Usually, it comes down to sexual pleasure.
The rectum is full of sensitive nerves that can stimulate the male prostate as well as parts of the vagina.
