Eight teenage girls who apparently met on social media have been charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death in Toronto.
Investigators claim the girls assaulted and stabbed the 59-year-old man in the Canadian downtown area early Sunday morning.
Paramedics took the man to hospital, where he died.
According to the police, three 13-year-old girls, three 14-year-old girls and two 16-year-old girls were arrested near the scene of the attack.
Detective Sergeant Terry Brown said investigators believe the girls were trying to take a bottle of alcohol from the man.
He said they were all “equally guilty.”
“There is no doubt in our minds that they were operating as one entity in the mentality of the massed mob when they chose to attack this man,” Brown added.
He said a number of weapons had been seized, but declined to specify their type. He also said that 3 of the girls had previously confronted the police.
The two girls met on social media but DS Brown said police “do not know how or why they met that evening”.
“It’s strange that they all bonded together and found their way into downtown Toronto. Their primary residences are everywhere,” he said.
“I’ve been in policing for nearly 35 years and you think you’ve seen it all,” said DS Brown.
“Anyone who wasn’t shocked to hear something like that obviously threw in the towel and just said that anything is possible in this world.
“Eight young girls and most of them are under the age of 16. If this isn’t disturbing and shocking to everyone, then quite frankly we are in trouble.”
DS Browne said police have spoken to the parents of the teens.
He said, “I can tell you it was a shock when they found out that their children had been involved in an event like this.”
DS Brown said the victim was living in a homeless shelter and her name has not yet been released.
He added that they would investigate whether the “crowds” had seen a resurgence in popularity on social media.
The officer said that 20 or 30 years ago, young teenage boys in Toronto would swarm others and try to steal Dr. Martens or Air Jordan shoes, but that trend has faded.
Canadian authorities cannot reveal the girls’ names because they are minors. They made their first court appearance and remain in detention.
The girls’ next appearance will be on December 29.
