A 3.3-magnitude earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area, hours after an earlier quake and days after the deadly quake in northern California, the US Geological Survey said.

The 3-mile-magnitude earthquake struck near Union City at 6:22 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, according to the USGS.

About 1,600 people from as far away as Chico and Los Banos reported feeling the earthquake to the agency.

“Slightly shook in the East Bay a few moments ago,” one resident wrote on Twitter.

“I felt it here in a big shake in Union City,” read another post.

A third post on Twitter read: “That was a very fast earthquake in Union City.”

The quake follows a 2.9-magnitude earthquake north of San Leandro, east of Oakland, at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday that was felt by more than 1,000 people.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck about 8 miles west of the small town of Ferndale, population 1,400, in Humboldt County at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Two people were killed and 12 injured in the quake, and 14,000 people are still without electricity. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the county.

Dozens of aftershocks continue to shake the Ferndale area, which is about 260 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Union City has a population of 69,000 located 25 miles southeast of San Francisco.

Magnitude measures the energy released by the earthquake’s source, says the USGS. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are often felt but rarely cause severe damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude are rarely felt by most people.
