Paris Saint-Germain wants to sign Manchester United midfielder Fred in 2023

Manchester United are set to receive a surprise interest in midfielder Fred, with PSG reportedly interested.

Although United launched an option on Fred’s contract this week, to extend it until June 2024, PSG are allegedly interested.

The Sun reports that Fred was on PSG’s list of potential signings next summer.

United will reportedly not consider selling for less than £30m.

PSG wants Fred: a reaction

United extended the contracts of four players this week: Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Fred.

Farid was the most surprising, with a report in the Guardian recently stating that Erik ten Hag would be let go on a free transfer.

The idea behind the extension could simply be for United to be able to bring in a fee for the midfielder. This has been a counterproductive strategy in the past, but with only a 12-month option, it really makes sense this time around.

Fred is a United player, selected to start just four of their 14 Premier League matches under Erik ten Hag.

While he enjoys a solid partnership with Casemiro for Brazil, he is not the first choice to pair him with United, and he has not been with the Seleco at the World Cup.

United signed Fred in 2018 from Shakhtar Donetsk, he will turn 30 in March.

We would take the £30m figure lightly. It’s hard to think of United turning down £25m with one year left on their deal, for example.

Paris Saint-Germain would be an attractive club for Fred to sign with, with a strong Brazilian team that includes Neymar and Marquinhos.

Ander Herrera made the same move in 2019 after being released from his contract, and went on to add two Ligue 1 titles to his trophy cabinet.

United continue to be linked with midfielders for 2023, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that Jude Bellingham is a dream target. If signed, or even an alternative option, Fred’s chances of playing would drop.

There are also young talents in the academy who will likely be pressing for playing time, including Hannibal Mejbri when he returns from loan next summer.
