A planned strike by GMB ambulance workers has been put on hold.
Union members in England and Wales were due to leave on December 28 in an increasingly bitter dispute over pay and employment.
GMB said there was “incredible” support during the industrial strike by the union and members of Unite and Unison on Wednesday.
A spokesperson said: “The NHS is on its knees and the public suffers every day as the Government has failed to properly resource and plan our health services. Nowhere is this more evident than in the appalling delays in obtaining an ambulance and then admission to the emergency department at A&E.
Solving problems like this starts with getting enough people to work in the NHS. Unless the government starts talking about wages now, the problems will get worse with each passing day.”
GMB National Secretary Rachel Harrison added: “We were overwhelmed with incredible public support on Wednesday for our paramedics and ambulance staff. People across the country have been amazing in supporting us and we care about them very much too.
“That’s why we put GMB’s proposed industrial action on hold on December 28th. We know the public will appreciate being able to enjoy Christmas without any additional worry. They support us and we support them.”
However, she added: “Our NHS workforce crisis is so severe, our commitment to giving ambulance staff the proper pay they deserve is stronger than ever, so we are rescheduling the work for 11 January 2023.

“The amazing British public is why we put our actions on hold over the Christmas period. But it also means the government can now do what the ambulance workers and the public want – get around the table and talk about wages now. We’re here 24/7. Anytime, anywhere.”
