Twenty people have died after a fire broke out in an unregistered nursing home in Siberia.

Russia’s Tass news agency reported that the fire broke out in a two-storey wooden building of a private nursing home in the city of Kemerovo on Friday.

The report quoted fire safety officials as saying that the entire second floor was burned in the fire.

The flames were brought under control shortly thereafter.

“At the site of the fire, rescuers continue to work on the ruins in conditions of low air temperature,” the report said.

“According to the latest data, 20 people have died.”

A criminal investigation has been launched into the possibility that the fire was caused by negligence.

Kuzbass Governor Sergei Tsvelev said all similar establishments, especially privately owned ones, would be inspected over the next week.
