Meteorologists said the Scottish Highlands could be in for a White Christmas.

There is a Yellow Warning in the Met Office for most mountainous areas and some low areas from 9pm on Christmas Day until 6pm on Boxing Day.

“Frequent stormy snowfalls are likely to cause some travel disruptions to higher roads,” the service said, adding that 10 centimeters (4 inches) of snow is expected to fall on higher ground.

The conditions could also cause power outages, and the temperature could drop as low as 1°C overnight on Sunday.

Heavy rain is expected in many other parts of the UK over the weekend.

The Environment Agency has issued 66 potential flood alerts for England, and Flood Warnings, which indicate flooding is expected, in Hellingly and Horsebridge in East Sussex, the North Sea at Roker in Sunderland, and the Weatherhill Stream at Smallfield in Surrey.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist David Oliver said: “An uneasy Christmas weekend is on the way for many, with those in the north and west seeing more frequent and heavier showers.

“High winds will affect some coasts over the weekend with gusts of wind in some places, especially in the north and west.

“Christmas Day will be an uneasy one for many, with more frequent rain in the northern half of the UK and some sporadic and fainter rain in the south.”
