A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said the Sun’s apology over a column in which Jeremy Clarkson said he “hated” Meghan was “nothing more than a PR stunt”.
The column became the most complained about by the Independent Press Standards Organization (Ipso), with more than 20,000 people contacting it about the article, according to Ipso.
The article was removed from the Sun website on Monday at Clarkson’s request after widespread criticism.
On Friday, The Sun newspaper said it regretted publishing the column and was “sincerely sorry”.
But a spokesperson for the Sussexes said on Saturday that the newspaper had not reached out to Meghan to apologise.
The spokesperson said: “The fact that The Sun did not contact the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows their intent. This is nothing more than a PR stunt.”
“While the public fully deserves the publication’s regrets for their dangerous comments, we wouldn’t be in this position if The Sun didn’t continue to turn a profit and exploit hate, violence and misogyny. A true apology would be a shift in its coverage and everyone’s moral standards. Unfortunately, we’re not holding our breath.” .
In the column, Clarkson wrote that he had been “dreaming about the day she was [Meghan] Made to parade naked through the streets of every city in Britain as crowds chanted, “Shame!” Throw clumps of feces on her.”
He added that he hated the Duchess of Sussex “on a cellular level” in the article published on Friday 16 December in the wake of the launch of the Netflix documentary series Meghan & Harry.
After widespread outrage, Clarkson issued a statement on Monday, but some criticized her for not offering an apology.
He said: Oh dear. I better put my feet in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I inaccurately referred to a scene in Game of Thrones, and it went badly with a good number of people. I am terrified because I have caused so much harm and I will be more careful in the future.”
“Columnists’ opinions are their own, but as publisher we understand that with freedom of expression comes responsibility,” The Sun said in its statement on Friday.
The statement added that Clarkson’s article had been removed from his website and archives.
