A murder investigation is underway after a woman was shot dead in a Merseyside village pub on Christmas Eve.

She and three men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds following the incident at the Lighthouse Inn in the Wirral village of Wallasey shortly after 11.50pm.

The woman is later declared dead, and her family is supported by specially trained officers.

Police said a number of people were also injured.

A cordon was placed in the area while officers were speaking to witnesses and examining CCTV footage.

Detectives Director Dave McCaughrean said: “This investigation is in its very early stages and we understand this is a truly horrific and devastating incident which took place just before Christmas Day in a busy place full of young people.

“We have a number of officers in Wallasey Village who are conducting extensive investigations to understand exactly what happened and take immediate action.

“A woman tragically lost her life on Christmas while many others were being treated in hospital, and our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family.

“I would ask anyone who was at the lighthouse in Wallasey Village last night and witnessed the incident or has motion or security camera footage of what happened to contact us as a matter of urgency as they may have information vital to our investigation.

“We believe the gunman left the pub’s car park in a dark-coloured car – possibly a dark-coloured Mercedes, shortly after the shooting, and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw this to contact us immediately.”
