EastEnders spoilers follow.
EastEnders boss Chris Clinshaw has explained the reason behind Mick Carter’s tragic exit.
Danny Dyer’s final scenes aired on the much-anticipated Christmas Day episode, in which Mick appears to drown while trying to rescue Linda from the water.
Dyer’s exit was confirmed earlier this year, but Clenshaw revealed how the actor stayed on the show longer in order to give Mick a proper Christmas ending.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a recent Christmas event, he said: “Mick Carter isn’t the type to go out in the back of a black cab, is he?
“I’m so grateful to Danny for staying a little longer and giving us a Christmas Day exit because what’s really important is that we give the audience great drama on Christmas Day and nothing is bigger than Mick’s exit.”

Explaining the significance of Mick and Linda’s reunion in the moments leading up to the tragedy, Clinshaw added: “I think it’s really important to bring them together. If you know the history of these two characters, their love of each other’s lives, that’s in their DNA.”
“What was challenging for us was finding a way out of Mick but keeping Linda, because Mick wasn’t going to leave Linda and he wasn’t going to leave his kids, so it was really tough. We got them all together, and I think that’s a beautiful moment.”

He continued, “I was watching them filming this scene, I had a brief in my office and I happened to look them up and saw them kissing, and I walked out of my office into the main office and I was like, Mick and Linda kissing!”
“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen it. It’s beautiful and takes you back to those years when they were so sweet and wonderful. So while it was one scene and two kisses, I think it’s a beautiful way to end their story and their journey. It’s ultimately a love story that ends tragically.”
When asked if the audience would get any closure as to Mick’s fate, Clinshaw replied: “You’ll have to wait and see. It’s EastEnders so anything can happen.”
Dyer then added: “I read Boxing Day and it’s unbelievable, Kellie is unbelievable. I read the next part because I wanted to see how quickly people got over it.”
“Boxing Day is very different and it’s a great episode.”
EastEnders broadcasts Mondays to Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show is also streaming on BBC iPlayer.
