This Boxing Day, and welcome to our live blog. From me Alan Tyers and the rest of the Telegraph Sport team, I hope you had a merry/acceptable Christmas and maybe you are, like us, excited to take back the Premier League on a packed day of live sports boxing. Here’s Ian Winrow to set the scene for this.

Antonio Conte backed Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane to get ahead quickly from his World Cup penalty shootout.

England captain Kane scored one penalty against France in the quarter-final on 10 December, but sent another 12-yard effort over the bar late in the 2–1 loss to the runners-up.

Kane accepted responsibility for England’s exit thereafter and returned to training this week after a short break.

The Tottenham striker is set to lead Brentford’s attack on Boxing Day and Conte, who was part of the Italy squad that lost the 1994 World Cup final on penalties to Brazil, is not worried about the 29-year-old.

He said: “No, honestly because we are talking about a world class striker.

“At the same time, you know football is this. Football can have exciting moments and you can also have a moment where you are a bit disappointed that you missed a penalty, the second penalty is the first goal he scores.

“But, when I was a player, I never missed a penalty because I didn’t kick; I never did because I was a real disaster at that. But with a penalty you lost the World Cup to Brazil and I think you live in the moment and you’re really frustrated.

“For sure in the first period you feel sad but then you know you have to move on. Football gives you the opportunity to have other opportunities to enjoy football because we don’t forget that we do this job and we are also really lucky that we can enjoy this sport.

“Football gives us the possibility to play in this sport and we have a lot of passion for it. Honestly I’m not worried about him. I’ve seen him do very well in those two days with us.”

Kane will feature on Boxing Day for Tottenham but World Cup winner Christian Romero will be absent and captain Hugo Lloris is set to be on the bench only against Brentford.

Conte has also seen injured Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison and Lucas Moura either in Qatar or at home during the mid-season break.

The former Chelsea boss has held dual sessions for Tottenham players at the Hotspur Way over the past month, but has yet to find time to discuss his contract.

Conte insisted: “I think in the future I would also like not to talk about this in the press conference because I think that the game we will play in this case Brentford is more important.”

“But what I can say is that I’m really happy at the club, to work here and I have a really good relationship with the club.

“We talk every day with the club and try to find the best solution in each situation, but I think we have six months to stay together, to enjoy the situation and then find, I repeat, the best solution.

“But I’m really happy here. This is very, very important to me.”
