A Christmas tragedy as a dead baby is found hours after he was sent home from the hospital

The distraught parents of a 22-month-old girl have told how they found her dead – just hours after bringing her home from hospital.

Little Hailey Thompson was diagnosed with a virus on December 18, but her family was told to continue giving her fluids and paracetamol instead of antibiotics.

But early the next day, her parents, Chris Thompson, 32, and Ebola Adam, 35, found her unresponsive in her bedroom.

Chris performed CPR before the paramedics took over and the baby was taken to Wigan Infirmary – where she tragically passed away despite the paramedics’ best efforts.

An investigation has now been opened after her parents complained that Hayley’s case was not taken seriously.

Chris, from Wigan, GTR Manchester, said: “We can’t believe we’ve lost our little girl.

It all happened so quickly. Something in her body gripped her.

“When we found her at 5.30am on a Monday, she was lying in the exact same position I had seen her in when I went to bed in the middle of the night, only her skin was stiff and discolored.

“It was a horrific sight that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

“We knew in our hearts that she was gone, but I called 999 and screamed into the phone that our daughter was dying, so they had me do CPR until the paramedics arrived for a quick response.

“But it was unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead in the hospital.”

Hailey started coughing and runny nose on December 7, and was taken to see a GP who prescribed antibiotics, but stopped taking them due to an allergic reaction.

A week later, she was taken to another medical appointment where the family was told she had a viral infection, and needed Calpol instead of antibiotics.

After just one day she was well enough to run, eat and drink well and went to bed at the usual time of 6.30pm.

Chris went to check on her at 11pm, where he found his daughter panting so he immediately called 999, who said an ambulance would be there soon.

20 minutes later, it hadn’t arrived, and 111 told him there was a two-hour wait, so he drove Healy to A&E, where they waited more than five hours before checking her out.

The doctor checked Hayley’s blood pressure and couldn’t check her tonsils, so she told the family to go home, where she went straight to sleep.

Her parents have been told to keep her hydrated and on her doses of Calpol and if she doesn’t improve in three days, send her back to A&E.

Then she got up at noon, but she was coughing, her nose was runny, and she was “completely abnormal.”

Hayley was put to bed at 6.15pm on 18 December and Chris noticed that she was panting again, but not as intensely as she had previously.

Less than six hours later, the couple made a heartbreaking discovery.

The Wigan Infirmary was having one of its busiest days ever on Sunday 18 and the department later declared a ‘serious incident’.

But Ebola and Chris want to know why no blood samples were taken when they took Hailey to the hospital “gasping for breath like a 90-year-old”.

The couple also said that an attempt to examine her tonsils was abandoned because she struggled, closing her mouth and then vomiting.

Chris and Iboulia are instructed to take Hailey home and keep her hydrated, and if she does not improve in three days, she must be sent back to A&E.

Tragically, however, the young man passed away within 24 hours.

Chris said: “We want answers. How does a healthy baby die in his sleep?

“And why wasn’t she tested for Strep A, scarlet fever or Covid, for example?”

An autopsy cannot be performed until December 28, leaving the couple facing an agonizing wait for answers and police have passed details to the coroner.

A spokesperson for the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our deepest condolences go out to Hayley’s family at this tragic time.

“We are aware of the family’s concerns and are currently awaiting further information to understand further.”
