Figures showed more people watched the King’s Christmas message than Queen Elizabeth II’s last festive broadcast.

The annual message was watched by an average of 8.1 million viewers on BBC One, according to the Foundation.

Last year, the late Queen’s Christmas broadcast was watched by 7.4 million viewers on the BBC and 1.7 million on ITV.

Charles III’s pre-recorded speech to the nation reflected the late queen’s established model, with a personal reflection of the year touching on current issues and a Christian framework.

In his letter, he sympathized with families suffering from the cost of living crisis and spoke of the “great anxiety and hardship” experienced by many who are trying to “pay their bills”.

The central theme was the celebration of “selfless devotion”, a value embodied by the late Queen. He praised the actions of individuals, charities and religious groups in support of the needy.

He delivered the historic Christmas broadcast from the settlement of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, reflecting on the late Queen’s celebratory speech in 1999.

Paying tribute to his late mother, His Majesty thanked the public for their “deeply moving” condolences, saying: “Christmas is a particularly moving time for all of us who have lost loved ones.

“We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in every cherished tradition.”

But unlike previous Christmas messages, the monarch made only brief references to other members of the royal family.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are only mentioned by name, while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not acknowledged at all. No family photos were photographed.

Video footage of senior members of the royal family conducting engagements in all four countries of the United Kingdom confirmed the ongoing work of the slim modern monarchy.
