New Year’s Eve Weather: Rain Forecast For The 31st – But January Can Have A Mild Start For Many | UK News

[ad_1]

With heavy rains expected in parts of the country on New Year’s Eve, the start of 2023 is set to be a watery one for many.

As midnight approaches Saturday, there is a 50% chance of rain in the capital and a 40% chance in Manchester.

Those partying in Cardiff have a whopping 60% chance of getting caught, according to long-term forecasts from the Met Office.

Those welcoming the New Year in the bars and pubs of Edinburgh and Belfast have better odds of staying dry, with only a 20% chance of rain currently.

Gusts of up to 40 mph can disrupt the festivities.

New Year’s Eve temperatures are likely to be around 11-12°C (51.8°F-53.6°F) in the south, and may reach 5-8°C (41°F-46.4°F) in the north.

A milder start to 2023

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said: “The weather looks unsettled, with wind at times, but it will be mainly coastal. There will be more rain at times, some heavy in the west.”

A white New Year sure seems a long way off, as “snow is likely to be confined to the Scottish mountains”.

And while it stays somewhat chilly in the north, those in the south can at least look forward to milder weather for the first few days of January.

New Year’s Day promises sunny spells in London and Belfast, a little sun in Manchester – along with light showers – and a cloudy day for those in Cardiff.

It’s bad news for people from Edinburgh, as those getting up in the city on Sunday morning are likely to be drenched by heavy rain.

Looking ahead, there is less wet weather in store, and the south and east are expected to become drier later in the week.

Today and the next few days

The weather is currently unsettled, with bouts of wind and heavy rain making it feel chilly all around.

Yellow warnings for snow were issued across most of Scotland on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the potential for travel disruption as some roads and railways will be affected by the weather.

A yellow warning of rain covering parts of southwest England and Wales, including Plymouth and Cardiff, is in effect from 2am on Wednesday, and will last until 3pm.

The rain will continue to spread to most places with strong winds, but the far north looks fine, and will be generally mild.
