The 23-year-old, who was stabbed to death on the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub, has been named after soccer player Cody Fisher.
“They broke our hearts, I lost my best friend. My family and I demand privacy and respect at this heartbreaking time,” his family said in a statement.
West Midlands Police were called to The Crane nightclub in Digbeth just before 11.45pm on Boxing Day.
Police said Mr Fisher was spending a night out with friends when a group of people approached him and stabbed him.
Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead after about half an hour. The police opened a murder investigation.
Mr. Fisher played for Stratford Town FC, which is in the South Central Premier Division. He also played for Bromsgrove Sporting.
Stratford Town chairman Jed McCrory told Sky News that “everyone was devastated by the news” and described Fisher as a “talented footballer” and “a lovely, lovely young man”.
A friend of Mr Fisher, who played with him last season at Bromsgrove, told Sky News: “He really was one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. He would do anything for you.”
The friend said Mr. Fisher texted him last night to ask if he was going out for the night, but he decided not to go.
Police said hundreds of people were in the club at the time of the stabbing.

Criticism of security searches in the event
Investigators watch closed-circuit television from the scene and urge anyone who was in the area to call.
Revelers at the nightclub criticized security searches at the event and described the “moody” atmosphere inside the venue.
Sydnee Power, from Birmingham, described “groups of lads” who were “looking to cause trouble”.
The 23-year-old said: “As soon as my friends and I walked in, it felt very strange and the atmosphere wasn’t good… There were only groups of lads everywhere, most of whom looked moody.
“A lot of them were definitely looking to cause trouble, and they were clearly not there to enjoy the music.”
Anyone could bring anything
An 18-year-old from Wolverhampton, who asked not to be named, said the accident was a “disaster waiting to happen”.
He said of the security checks: “My friend and I, who I was with, were not once asked to clean our pockets even though our pockets were full. I had cargo pants with pockets full.
“They didn’t even touch me while they were searching me, they just followed the outline of my body with their hands and then tapped me to say go ahead.
“Obviously you want everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves (but) when we walked in I said to my friend, ‘This is the worst research I’ve ever seen.’ Anyone could have brought anything.”
In a statement on Instagram, The Crane said it was “deeply shocked and saddened that a man lost his life last night as the Boxing Day event approached.”
She added that the club’s New Year’s Eve event had been cancelled.
Police said the scene remains closed while evidence is collected and neighborhood officers will patrol the area over the coming days to provide reassurance.
